Shell Casing Found at Vernon School

A spent shell casing was found at Vernon Center Middle School on Thursday.

VERNON, CT — Police are investigating how part of a bullet wound up at Vernon Center Middle School on Thursday.

In the afternoon, a student found an empty shell casing inside a stairwell at the school, police said. IN a call to parents, Principal James Harrison said the shell casing was found in a corner of a stairwell.

The student notified a teacher, who informed the school administration, police said.

School officials called Vernon police, who confirmed that it was a "spent" shell casing, according to a report.

Police are actively investigating to determine how the casing ended up in the school, according to a report.

The incident occurred at the end of the school day and police said they were present during
school dismissal. Police have conducted an initial investigation and found no specific threat to Vernon Center Middle School, according to a report.

As a precautionary measure, Vernon Police and School Officials are taking "extra steps to ensure
the safety of the students and staff at Vernon Center Middle School" and "Vernon Police and school officials work collaboratively to ensure the safety and security of students and staff," according to a joint statement.
