Patrol Nabs Vernon Driver For New Kid-Related DUI Law

Labor Day enforcement efforts were funded through state and federally administered grants.

VERNON, CT — Roving patrols aimed at drunken drivers led to several arrests in Vernon over the Labor Day holiday period, including one for violating a relatively new law about driving under the influence with kids in the car.

Vernon police on Friday released the results of roving patrols that ran from Thursday through Monday during the labor Holiday period. The patrols were funded by grants administered by state and federal authorities.

Vernon police made six arrests for driving under the influence during the patrols, according to the results. A total of 15 drivers were issued tickets for other offenses like speeding, seat belt violations and other safety-related infractions, the results show.

Last Sunday, one driver was charged with DUI with a child younger than 18, a law that went into effect on October 2016,according to an arrest report.

It was 12 minutes after midnight when an officer noticed a car tailgating and swerving over the center divider at the intersection of West Street and Peterson Road, according to an arrest report.

The car was pulled over and the driver, 31-year-old Ashley Adams of Vernon, who had her two children with her in the vehicle, failed two sobriety tests while being more than twice over the legal blood alcohol content limit, according to an arrest report.
