A Paw-fect Finish to Vernon Effort to Raise Money for Police Dog

The volunteer effort raised more than $26,000 - far exceeding the $20,000 goal.

A citizen group formed to raise money for the purchase and training of a dog for the Vernon Police Department has ended successfully with more than $26,000 raised through donations from dozens of Vernon residents and businesses.

The effort was undertaken by a volunteer group to recognize the 125th anniversary of the Vernon Police Department and to thank the men and women who put on the uniform each day to make sure our roads, homes, businesses and schools are safe.

The fundraising campaign took just two months and saw donations of pennies and nickels from young children to large donations from the Rockville Downtown Association, the Vernon Junior Women’s Club, Olenders, Zahner’s, United Bank Foundation, AFSME 1471 and even the American Kennel Club in South Windsor.

The original goal was $20,000 and to date $26,015 has been raised, allowing the Vernon Police
Department to buy the police dog and pay for extensive training of the dog and its police officer handler.

The funds will also be used to buy two canine bulletproof vests - one for the new dog and one for the existing dog, Thor. In addition, a crate kennel for the police car will be purchased, as well as a home kennel, a “bite suit” and other accessories for training. Money will also be set aside for veterinary services and items such as leashes and collars.

“The outpouring of support has been incredible,” said Lisa Moody, who led the effort along with Tim Poloski, Patty Noblet, Thomasina Clemons, MarissaRoy and Gail Phillips – Bossett.

“All members of the Vernon Police Department are grateful for the show of support and appreciation by Vernon residents and businesses. We are proud to serve our community as law enforcement professionals. We work hard each and every day and we look forward to adding a new four-legged member to our force,” said Vernon Police Chief James Kenny.
