Picture Vernon: A Major Intersection, 1950s Style

VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to a busy intersection in the mid-20th century.

Pictured is the Route 83-West Street-Union Street exchange in the 1950s.

Two gas stations are visible, indicating the importance of the automobile in daily life, even then.

On the right side of the picture, the roof of St. Joseph’s church rises above the trees.

The gas stations and the church are still there, but everything looks a little different. A World War II monument is also at the location today.
