VERNON, CT — The latest segment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to this week 52 years ago and a raging fire that destroyed an entire block on West Main Street in the Rockville section of town.

The fire broke out on Feb. 20, 1971.

The photo is from the archives of the Tolland Fire Department and was taken by John Turner. The Tolland FD was called in to assist with the multi-alarm blaze.

The area of the fire is now a parking lot and a park. The TKB Club, shown in the foreground, is still there, minus the vintage soft drink sign. The old brick housing units on the right are still there as well. The old cars were big, but not too large for firefighters to work around.
