VERNON, CT — The landmark former main Rockville Bank building in Vernon will not be housing a cannabis establishment, a leading town official said Monday.

Vernon Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said an application to turn the building at 25 Park St. into a "recreational marijuana" store was withdrawn earlier this month.

The building, complete with its trademark overhanging thermometer, sits across from Rockville Superior Court. Gately cited "complications with acquiring the building," as the reason for the withdrawal.

The building is currently being listed for $359,000, $40,000 less than when it first went on the market in May 2020.

The branch was closed that year following the acquisition of United Bank by People's United Bank. People's United is becoming M&T Bank in another buyout.

Rockville Bank, the most recognized former tenant of the building, became United Bank in a merger five years earlier.

According to the listing, the 2-story building sits on .78 acres with the first floor measuring 5,266 square feet and the second 840 square feet. The two-lane drive up window is still intact. Gately did not say if the plans included a proposal for drive-up marijuana service.

There are 47 parking spaces on the site.
