Praise for Vernon's Board of Education

For years I criticized the Board of Education and superintendents for not asking for what the children needed. Party loyalty prevented the Board of Ed from putting the Mayor and Council on the hot-seat by asking for as much as the children needed. Republicans have controlled the Board of Ed for twelve years, the Town Council for eight and the Mayor's office for six. This year, the Vernon Board of Education did ask for what the children needed, including full day kindergarten. The Republican Board of Ed members who voted for their budget had to have a great deal of courage as, unfortunately, there is a dark side to the current administration. To "protect people on fixed incomes" the Mayor and Town Council cut $1.5 million from the Board of Ed Budget. They are willing to burden our children for life with a "bottom-thirty" education. I'm on a "fixed income". I certainly don't expect Vernon to sacrifice its students for my sake. One way or another we adults will take care of ourselves, the children can't. Help them.
