Retired Staffer Gives Perfect Gift To Vernon DPW Drivers

A popular Vernon DPW staffer will be watching drivers in the rear view mirror even after retirement.

VERNON, CT — Anne-Marie Carlson, known for 18 years as the constantly smiling face at the Vernon Department of Public Works headquarters, came up with the perfect parting gift for the drivers on her retirement day Friday.

That's right ... Carlson, the longtime DPW administrative assistant, made sure they would think of her in the rear view mirror with hanging air fresheners featuring her portrait.

"That's right. They're still going to think of me when they drive away," she said with a laugh as well-wishers filled the conference room for a reception on her final day at the office.

Vernon Mayor Daniel Champagne called her a valued staff member. Vernon DPW Director Dwight Ryniewicz said Carlson was always a calming influence no matter what was going on.

"We could call in Anne-Marie to work the phones and she was also calm and pleasant no matter what," he said. "It could be the biggest snowstorm, but she would work the phones and keep everyone relaxed."

Carlson said she was going to "enjoy" retirement and plans could include some traveling.
