RMS Loses a Wild One in State Quarters

Top-ranked NB scores two late goals and wins it in overtime.

The Rockville/Manchester/Stafford United hockey team could have crawled into a corner when top-ranked Newington/Berlin scored less than a minute into their state Division III quarterfinal game on Thursday at Trinity College.

Instead RMS decided to stick around and make a game of it.

United led 2-1 after one period and 3-2 after two and Newington/New Britain took the game overtime after pulling its goaltender and scoring twice with two minutes to go before winning 5-4.

NB was the home team.

"We were ranked eighth and gave the No. 1-ranked team everything we had," RMS coach Christian Stevenson said. "Every one of my players gave all they had and can look at themselves in the mirror and be proud of what they accomplished. It was a heartbreaker only in the sense that our great season is over."
