Roof Collapses Over Drive-Up Section Of Bank In Vernon
A section of roof over the drive-up area of a bank in Vernon near a busy courthouse has collapsed.
VERNON, CT — The inner section of the roof over a bank drive-up area in Vernon collapsed Sunday afternoon.
Both lanes were covered in a pile of rubble early Monday morning at the United Bank Branch in the Rockville section of Vernon. The branch is located at 25 Park St., across the street from Rockville Superior court. It was closed indefinitely.
A police officer stood guard until a crew could arrive and install a protective fence around the area. The officer said police were at the scene since the collapse took place Sunday afternoon. Building inspectors were also due to arrive.

It happened at 4:45 p.m., according to a police report. A neighbor was outside grilling, heard a crash and witnessed most of the accident.
United Bank released the following statement at 9 a.m. Monday:

"Out of abundance of caution and always keeping our customers’ and employees’ safety a top priority, we closed the branch today — Monday, July 15 — and are encouraging United Bank employees who usually bank at the Park Street in downtown Rockville to use the Lafayette Square branch, closeby at 20 Hyde Ave. We will announce when the branch will reopen after we inspect the building."
No one was injured, police said.
