VERNON, CT — A new Dollar Tree is joining Rockville Pharmacy at a prominent parcel on Route 83.

The sign popped up this week on the facade at 42 Windsor Ave. as workers were busy renovating the interior.

Vernon Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said Tuesday that the Dollar Tree is slated to open this summer. It will be the second Dollar Tree in town, joining a store at the Tri-City Plaza at Vernon Circle. The owner is moving the store from the Big Y plaza in Ellington, officials said.

In March, Rockville Pharmacy announced it would be leaving its current location at 40 West Main St. in favor of the former Veggie World location at 42 Windsor Ave. It is also slated for a summer opening, Gately said.

Windsor Avenue is the local name for that section of Route 83. The building hosted produce businesses under two different sets of management. For many years before that, it was Hartmann's supermarket.

A sister store — Family Dollar — is next door.

Rockville Pharmacy will be joining CVS and Walgreens in a row of businesses that offer prescription services separated by just a few driveways.

It once anchored the rear plaza on West Main Street with the Rockville Lanes bowling establishment. The lanes have been defunct for years.
