So Why Does Vernon Have New Electricity Towers? Blame The Woodpeckers

VERNON, CT — So ... there's a back story as to why Eversource Energy has been replacing all those electricity wire towers in Vernon. It's the woodpeckers.

The work has been going on for weeks and is about to wrap up, a spokeswoman for the utility said Wednesday.

In all, Eversource has replaced 11 wooden lattice towers with metal monopoles in Vernon.

Over the years, woodpeckers have damaged the lattice structures, Eversource officials said.

The metal monopoles "help ensure we have a stronger delivery system," Eversource officials said.
