Soup Kitchen Tirade Lands Vernon Man With Charges

A tirade at the Vernon soup kitchen and an incident downtown landed a man with charges, police said.

VERNON, CT — A man is facing three criminal charges after creating a disturbance at the Vernon soup kitchen, harassing a woman in downtown Rockville and spitting in the face of a police officer, a report indicates.

John Shaw, of Vernon, was arrested at 2:56 p.m. on Thursday, police said. He was charged with creating a public disturbance, possessing alcohol in a public area and interfering with police, according to a report.

He was intoxicated and swearing at staff members at the soup kitchen at 15 Prospect St. after being warned about his behavior by police 27 minutes earlier, according to a report.

He was then "bothering" a woman on nearby Park Street a short time later, police said.

He was located behind 3 Prospect St., drunk with an open bottle of alcohol, and he resisted efforts by the cops to put him in the rear seat of a cruiser and spit in the face of one officer while screaming at him, according to a report.
