VERNON, CT — State representative districts for some Vernon residents are changing for 2022. The Connecticut Legislature has realigned several state House and Senate districts in connection with the "reapportionment" required every decade following a new census.

Here is the announcement from Vernon elections officials about what voters can expect:

You may be receiving a letter in the mail in next few days from the Vernon Registrar of Voters about
changes that are coming for some Vernon voters - in terms of where they will vote and for whom they will be voting for in terms of State Representative. That’s because the state legislature has readjusted many state House and state Senate districts all across the state under a program called reapportionment.

Reapportionment occurs every 10 years following the completion of the federal census.
Currently, Vernon is split up into two House districts - the 56th Assembly District, which comprises the vast majority of Vernon, and the 8th Assembly District, which is essentially everything south of I-84 (think Tunnel Road, Lake Street, Valley Falls and Washington Street areas).
Beginning this Fall Vernon will instead be split up into three House districts – the 56 th , the 53 rd and 57th.
Most of the town will still be part of the 56th Assembly District. But we will no longer be part of the 8th Assembly District. Instead, we will now be part of the 53rd and 57th Assembly Districts.
The 57th District will include a large part of the Skinner Road area (these voters were previously in the 56th District). See the map below. All of these voters, who are now part of the 57 th District), will vote at Skinner Road School as they have done in the past.
The 53rd District will include a large part of what is now the 8th District (the streets south of the
highway). See the map below. These voters will continue to vote at VCMS even though they are
moving from the 8th District to the 53rd District.
A chunk of the western part of the 8th District (south of the highway - Washington Street/Lake
Street/Campbell Avenue areas) will be moved into the 56th District. These voters will vote at Skinner Road School. Most of these voters have voted at Skinner Road School before, but there are several dozen voters who will now be voting at Skinner Road School instead of VCMS.
We know this may seem a little confusing but we had no choice in these decisions - the actions were
taken by the State Legislature and its Reapportionment Commission.
We have done our best to minimize disruptions to our voting or poll locations. So, if you are one of the affected voters keep a lookout for your letter in the mail telling you where you will vote and what State House District you are in.
