State Releases Vernon's Standardized Test Scores

Vernon was near or below the goals in most instances on standardized tests.

State officials on Thursday released the numbers regarding the two major standardized tests - the Connecticut Mastery Test for students in Grades 3 through 8, and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test for those in Grade 10.

The numbers can be viewed on the attached PDF files.

Vernon students generally performed near or below the state goals in math, reading and writing.

There were several large differences, mainly on the low side:

In Grade 4, the percentage of students at or above the goal in reading is 64.1, while in Vernon it is 56.1. The percentage reaching proficiency is 78.3 statewide and 70.9 in Vernon.

In Grade 5, the percentage of students at or above the goal was six to eight points less than the state average in all three categories.

In Grade 6, the difference for percentages reaching the goal was 15 points in math, 12 points in reading and nine points in writing, all on the low side.

In Grade 7, the percentage at or above the goal in math is 68.3 for the state and 60.5 locally. In reading it was 79.9 statewide and 76.3 locally and in writing it was 83.9 and 87.7, respectively.

The percentage of those reaching proficiency in reading locally was 88.0 and the state average was 87.4

In Grade 8, the difference for those making goal in the three categories was six to eight points on the low side.

For the CAPT, 39.5 percent of local students reach or exceeded the goal in math while 49.3 percent did so statewide. The respective percentages were 39.9 and 47.3 in reading and in writing the respective percentages were 35.5 and 47.5.
