Vernon Police Dog Helps Uncover Stolen Gun

A traffic stop in Vernon led to the seizure of a stolen firearm out of South Carolina, police said.

VERNON, CT — A traffic stop for a missing front registration plate turned into Vernon police seizing a stolen gun on Sunday with the help of a dog.

The incident took place at 9:28 p.m. at the intersection of Orchard Street and Davis Avenue Extension, police said.

During the traffic stop, 27-year-old Edwin Quiles, of East Hartford, was arrested and charged with the illegal possession of weapon on a motor vehicle and sixth-degree larceny in addition to the plate violation, according to a report.

He was held overnight on a $75,000 bond and was to appear in court Monday, a report indicates.

A police dog first alrted an officer to possible traces of narcotics, police said.

Police then searched the vehicle and found a loaded .40-cal. Glock pistol wrapped in a plastic bag under a seat, according to a report.

The gun was stolen out of South Carolina, police said.

There were not enough narcotics to file a drug charge, according to a report.
