VERNON, CT — In a scene reminiscent of the Anthrax scares in the early 2000s, responders descended on a hone in Vernon for a potential hazardous materials situation.

On Friday, Vernon Fire Department units were dispatched to Worcester Road after white powder was discovered in a piece of mail.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and units from the University of Connecticut and Ellington were also called to the scene.

The powder was identified as being "non-hazardous" and the property was turned back over to the homeowner, officials said.
