Strange Rust Discovery Closes Valley Falls Pond In Vernon

Weekend swimming in Vernon has been shifted to Newhoca Park as a strange situation at Valley Falls is sorted out.

VERNON, CT — A strange discovery in the water at Valley Falls Park has prompted Vernon officials to shift weekend swimming to Bolton Lake and Newhoca Park.

The Vernon Parks and Recreation Department Friday announced the closure of the beach at Valley Falls Park for this weekend. No swimming signs were posted.

In its place, the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department has opened the beach at Newhoca Park for swimming.

Swimming hours are until 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Town officials said a parks and rec employee has spotted some "rust colored water" while performing doing routine maintenance at Valley Falls.

Town officials have asked the local health department to check it out.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we shifted weekend swimming to the other swimming area," town officials said.
