VERNON, CT — The town of Vernon and the Vernon ShopRite have announced a unique partnership to offer "essential" grocery packets amid coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

ShopRite is located in the Tri-City Plaza and is owned and operated by Waverly Markets. Beginning Tuesday, and continuing every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter, area residents will have the option to purchase pre-packaged "essential grocery

supplies" via a "touchless drive-up service" at Rockville High School, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"The Town has heard from its residents and we have experienced for ourselves the difficulty in obtaining essential supplies due to shortages in our shopping markets," Mayor Daniel Champagne said. "This public-private partnership provides a safe and convenient choice for residents to obtain basic provisions for their homes and assists Vernon in its economic recovery efforts."

Vernon Town Admistrator Michael Purcaro called the move "our duty as civic leaders to care for our residents and create sustainable solutions that benefit the whole community."

Purcaro said the program is part of Vernon's continuous "COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery strategy."

Jordan Coe, the president and pwner of the Vernon ShopRite said, "We want to make sure our valued customers have access to the essential items they need."

Here is the lineup:

  • Option A – Grocery Bag for $20: Contents may vary, but will include fruit, cereal, juice, 5-pound bag of rice, pasta, sauce, canned vegetable, and a loaf of bread.
  • Option B – Grocery Bag for $20: Contents may vary, but will include canned soup, potato or tortilla chips, fruit, pudding cake, a six-pack muffins, and a gallon of water.
  • Household Essentials Bag for $25: Contents may vary, but will include paper towels, toilet paper, personal care wipes, and a germicidal cleaner.

Area residents may purchase any combination of these grocery bag options.

Grocery and food items will be subject to change weekly, based on supplier availability and input from the public.

Grocery bag purchases must be made in advance of pick-up by calling ShopRite directly at 860-454-2264 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily.
