Traffic Restrictions Outlined For Vernon Winterfest

VERNON, CT — Road restrictions have been announced for Friday's Vernon Winterfest event.

Vernon Winterfest is scheduled to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will include a fire truck parade.

During the event, the center of Rockville will be closed to traffic, police said. The road closures will run from West Main Street at Union St. to East Main Street at Court Street.

All traffic will be detoured around the center of Rockville using Vernon Avenue, Brooklyn Street and Court Street. The closure will be in effect until approximately 9 p.m., police said.

In addition, during the brief parade, traffic on Grove Street will be detoured onto Laurel Street to Cedar Street to Brooklyn Street. The road will be re-opened immediately following the event.

Winterfest is the free annual holiday celebration that features not only the fire truck parade, but the lighting of the tree in Central Park and the snowflake on the Fox Hill Tower and the arrival of Santa Claus at the Santa House.

A DJ will play holiday music, the Rockville High School Marching Band will perform. The parade is slated to begin between 6 and 6:15 p.m. and travels down East Main Street to West Main to Central Park.

The fire truck parade will feature firefighters from Vernon and several neighboring towns. Mayor Daniel Champagne will lead the lighting of the tree, the snowflake on Fox Hill Tower and the lights at Rockville Memorial Hospital. After the tree lighting, sugar cookies and apple cider will be served in front of Town Hall. Candy canes will also be handed out.
