The man pulled out of Terrace Drive and began accelerating. The truck suddenly veered off the road to the right, grazed a utility pole, ran over a traffic sign, became airborne as it hopped the curbing on a small traffic island and slammed head-in into the sign stanchion at Lucky's Cabaret.

The man immediately climbed out of the truck as employees from neighboring businesses and neighbors rushed to help. The front bumper of the truck flew off and landed about 15 feet away.

The truck's airbags deployed and the man refused medical transport at the site of the crash, police at the scene said.

Police said the truck was traveling at about 35 mph when it veered off the road, just a short distance from Terrace Drive. It is possible the power of the truck's V-8 engine caught the driver off-guard, police said.

Police said they are still investigating the crash.

Eversource Energy was at the scene repairing a wire that came loose when the truck hit the utility pole. The crew was done at 3:51 p.m.
