Unsung Heroes

First, I would like to thank you all once again for continuing to read our updates and support our family. I started all of this with a couple of goals:

  • To share with the world more about my aunt Michele because she is important and she matters.
  • To raise money to support her and the American Cancer Society.
  • To gather as many birthday wishes as possible for her.
  • As a coping strategy for myself. Although it feels selfish, it’s important too.

There’s no doubt that through this ordeal, Michele has it the worst. She endures the pain of her illness and treatments, experiences the struggle to manage her pain, has to adapt to new ways of living her life, is forced out of work and her normal activities, loses her hair and I could go on. Cancer sucks. That’s the truth of it. I’ll never fully understand what Michele is going through and I wouldn’t wish it upon others. But, I’m going to do my absolute best to be there for her through thick and thin. We all share a strong spirit of hope and an unwavering commitment to never giving up.

With that said, there are often people who go unrecognized by most during these times. That person for us is Lisa, an unsung hero. For all intents and purposes, Lisa has been a caregiver for Michele. It’s been challenging being so far away (I’m in CT, they’re in FL) during this time. I’m so comforted knowing that Lisa is right there for Michele. Lisa often accompanies Michele to chemo treatments and doctors visits (which involves a lot of travel and a lot of waiting). She runs errands with her and helps her with day-to-day tasks and uses her medical experience to help Michele navigate health insurance and her options. I know it’s not easy and I respect her so much for it. Working 40+ hours per week and living your own life while taking responsibility for helping someone elses with theirs isn’t easy. For that Lisa, I thank you. I recognize the sacrifices you have made to be there for Michele. We’re so thankful for your helping hand and caring heart.
