Vernon Citizens Seek to Take a Bite Out of Crime
Residents working to raise funds for a second police dog.

September is going to the dogs – at least it is in Vernon where a special effort has just begun to raise $20,000 to purchase and train a second police dog, as well as to buy bullet proof vests for both the new dog and the existing police dog, Thor.
The fundraising effort is being conducted by a group of local citizens in honor of the Vernon Police Department’s 125th anniversary (1890-2015).
“We wanted to do something special to recognize the Police Department’s anniversary and to say thank you to the brave law enforcement folks who protect us each and every day,” said Lisa Moody, who is helping to lead the fundraising campaign.

Vernon Police Chief James Kenny is appreciative of his department’s recognition and pleased by the prospects of having a second police dog on the job.
The new dog and his police handler will undergo four weeks of intensive training together in Pennsylvania with a world-renowned master trainer of police canines. The dog will primarily be used on patrol for tracking and training in narcotic searches.
“The Vernon Police Department is proud of its history of service and of the generations of men and women who have worn our uniform over the years. It’s very special that the people of the town want to recognize our service and “give back” in this way. A second police dog will go a long way in helping us to continue providing outstanding service to the community,” said Chief Kenny.
Contribution jars are being set up in many businesses throughout the town. Those wishing to donate directly may send a check made payable to “Town of Vernon, Police Dog Fund,” c/o Vernon Police Department, 725 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT 06066.
