Vernon Cops: Rockville Man Was Yelling Slurs At Neighbor In Front Of Kids At School Bus Stop

His charges include a racial crime, police said.

VERNON, CT - A Cottage Street man is facing three criminal charges for yelling racial slurs at a neighbor while children stood at a nearby school bus stop, Vernon police said.

The incident took place Wednesday at 8:04 a.m. Jeffrey Chastain, 61, is facing second-degree breach of peace, risk of injury to a child and illegal ridicule based on race, color or creed charges for his antics, Vernon police said.

Officers went to his 12 Cottage St. address in the Rockville section of Vernon after receiving a disorderly conduct complaint, according to an arrest report. When they arrived at the house, police found Chastain "yelling violently" and directing "racial epithets" at a neighbor and another resident in the parking areas for his building and 18 Cottage St., according to an arrest report.

As Chastain was yelling and screaming the slurs, children were at a nearby school bus stop, Vernon police said.

He was being held on a $5,000 bond Thursday while awaiting a May 3 court appearance, according to an arrest report.
