Vernon Eatery Owner Charged with 25 Tax Violations

A Vernon restaurant owner has been charged with tax violations.

VERNON, CT — The owner of a Vernon eatery has been charged with 25 counts of failing to pay sales tax and use tax, the state Department of Revenue Services confirmed on Thursday.

George Giotsas was arrested on Dec. 5 and is due in court on March 13, according to a DRS spokesman and judicial system records. Records show he is in custody on a $5,000 bond.

The charges are related to his to his business, Little Mark's Big Barbecue in Vernon, a DRS spokesman said.

The 25 instances range from October of 2014 to July of 2017, according to judicial system records.

Failing to file a sales tax/use tax return is a misdemeanor, a DRS spokesman said. Giotsas was charged under CT State Statute 12-428(1), which covers "willful failure to file a return," a DRS spokesman said.

The restaurant is located at 226 Talcottville Road in Vernon.
