Vernon Homes Evacuated After Burglar Causes Gas Leak

A gas leak was detected in a Vernon neighborhood at lunchtime on Thursday.

VERNON, CT — A section of Talcott Avenue was evacuated at lunchtime on Thursday because of a gas leak, police said.

The home at 73 Talcott Ave. is vacant, but someone had broken into the home, stole pipes, and left a leaky stub behind, police said.

Police, and fire crews rushed to the scene at about 12:45 p.m. They were joined by a crew from Eversource Energy.

The home was full of gas, from a broken pipe in the basement caused by the burglar, police said. An Eversourse crew was able to shut the gas off at the street level and a fire crew ventilated the home, police said.

No injuries were reported.

The scene was cleared by 2 p.m., police said.

Neighboring homes were evacuated, police said.
