Vernon Mourning Loss Of Former Fire Chief, Fire Marshal Don Maguda

VERNON, CT — A retired fire chief and fire marshal in Vernon has died.

Fire officials announced the passing of Donald Maguda Saturday evening.

Mayor Dan Champagne said of his passing, "Chief Maguda selflessly served our community for decades. He was a true professional, a strong leader, extremely knowledgeable and a great person. He is going to be missed."

Maguda served with the Rockville Fire Department starting in 1954 with the Snipsic Hook and Ladder Company. He served on what was Truck 141 at the time.

Maguda rose through the ranks with the Rockville FD and became Chief in 1967. He oversaw the consolidation of the Rockville FD and Vernon Fire District into the Town of Vernon Fire Department.

In 1980 he was appointed chief of the merged departments.

Maguda retired as chief in 1986 and transitioned to fire marshal. He served there until his retirement in 2002.

Said Town Administrator and Emergency Management Director Michael Purcaro, "Vernon is fortunate to have people like Don Maguda, who dedicated his life to serving our residents, first as a firefighter then as fire chief and finally as fire marshal. He is a legend in our fire department and the importance of his service to our community cannot be overstated. Vernon is a special place because of people like Chief Maguda."

Maguda's son, David, is a retired captain.

Tributes poured in a social media over the weekend. Here is a sampling:

  • "Awwww, Chief …. What a legacy you left, what a life you led. A ripple effect that will go on through generations. This world is better because you were in it, and sadder now that you are not. It was certainly an honor to know you, sir."
  • "Such an honor to have known and worked with this man. Rest in Peace Chief."
  • "He was chief when I first joined at 15. He introduced himself and wanted to know why I wanted to be a firefighter. The answer I gave him I think impressed him because we talked for several minutes as to what I could expect to see and learn. It reinforced my love for the fire service. It was an honor to serve under him. R.I.P Chief."
  • "Such a great man and we are grateful for his service to our community."
  • "The stories Chief Maguda had were incredible he will be missed by many. Rest easy Chief."
  • "Don was one of the best men I've ever met. Such a dedicated individual and true gentlemen."
