Vernon Obituary: Francis Simcic, Jr., 66

Condolences to his family and friends.

Francis “Fran” Simcic Jr., 66, of Vernon, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen Simcic, his daughter and son-in law, Ashley and Christopher Zaugg of Colchester, his son, Cole Simcic of Vernon, and his adored granddaughter, Harper Zaugg.

Born January 2, 1951, the son of Francis Sr. and Arlene (Bader) Simcic, Fran had fond memories of his New Britain neighborhood. Always patriotic, Fran enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1971-1973. A firm believer that there is no greater duty than to fight for another individual’s freedom, Fran deployed to Southeast Asia as a “grunt” (rifleman).

Following his Honorable Discharge, Fran returned to New Britain older than his years. Fran attended college on the GI Bill, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree at Central Connecticut State University and his Master of Social Work degree at the University of Connecticut.

Fran worked in the social service field as a substance abuse clinician at the Hartford Dispensary, where he empowered and supported his clients in maintaining a substance-free lifestyle. For the last ten years of his career, Fran worked as a clinician for the DMHAS Military Support Program (MSP), where he provided free clinical services for military members and their families.

Fran’s personal experience as a Marine allowed him to understand the challenges associated with returning home following a deployment. His position was a calling, and he embodied the motto, “leave no soldier behind,” helping countless veterans and their families.

In retirement, Fran enjoyed doting on his granddaughter, working in the yard, traveling to Florida, and spending time with his granddog. Fran’s family meant the world to him. He enjoyed family gatherings and holiday celebrations, and he loved reminiscing about family vacations to North Carolina.

His wife, daughter, son-in-law, son, and granddaughter provided him much love and support throughout his life, especially in the last several years as he faced numerous medical challenges.

Fran was thankful for the special relationships he maintained with his extended family members, his father and stepmother, Francis Sr. and Lorette Simcic of Newington, his sister, Katherine Simcic of Hartford, his very special aunt, Anna Marie Simcic of Hartford, his close cousin, Stephen Tabol of Groton, Massachusetts, and his mother-in-law, Virginia Press of Manchester.

Fran valued his friends and esteemed colleagues, who always supported him with a seemingly endless array of cards, treats, visits, and laughs.

Fran’s family would like to thank Yale’s Smilow Cancer Center and Connecticut Hospice for their medical care, compassion, and friendship.

A memorial service will be held Monday, September 25, 2017 at 12 noon at the State of Connecticut Veterans’ Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fran’s name to the Connecticut National Guard Foundation, Inc., 360 Broad Street, Hartford, CT 06105.
