Vernon Obituary: Ruth Rodgers, 100

Condolences to her family and friends.

Ruth Marion (Horman) Rodgers, 100, of Melbourne Beach, FL, and Vernon, beloved wife of the late Richard J. Rodgers, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 20, 2017.

Born in Dracut, MA, the daughter of the late Harry and Bridget (Mullen) Horman, she grew up in the Collinsville neighborhood of Dracut with her seven late brothers and sisters. She attended Lowell High School. Ruth married her husband Richard in 1940, and they lived in Lowell, MA for 71 years. She has lived in Melbourne Beach, FL and Vernon since 2011.

She was employed by the former Educator Biscuit Company in Lowell until it closed, and she retired from Lowell General Hospital in 1978. Ruth loved to crochet and make kitchen towels, and she made many afghans and towels for her family and friends. She was an avid bingo player for over 50 years, and an avid Red Sox fan who watched many ball games with her sons and great granddaughters. Ruth taught and played many board games and card games with all her grand and great grandchildren as well as enjoyed dancing her whole life.

She is survived by her three sons and daughter-in-law, Richard J. Rodgers of Tolland, Thomas H. Rodgers of Melbourne Beach, FL, and Joseph H. and Janice (Maroon) Rodgers of Vernon; six grandchildren, Dan and Cheryl (Rodgers) Chamberlin, Marc and Deborah (Rodgers) Israel, Peter and Christine (Rodgers) Glyman, Joseph T. and Nancy (Martel) Rodgers, Timothy and Jonilyn (Rodgers) Williams, Samuel and Jennifer (Rodgers) Valencia; thirteen great grandchildren, Jordan Chamberlin, Kathrine Chamberlin, Maryrose Israel, Emma Glyman, Delaney Glyman, Joseph W. Rodgers, Lindsey Rodgers, Hailey Rodgers, Thomas Rodgers, Michael and Katelyn (Williams) Geisler, McKenzie Williams, Alysa Valencia, and Ethan Valencia; many dear nieces and nephews, including their children, and many close friends. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Nadine F. Rodgers; her daughter-in-law, Rosemary (Carufel) Rodgers, and her seven siblings, Mary Dubuque, Anthony Horman, Grace Buston, Charles Horman, Margaret Prescott, Raymond Horman, and Arlene Gleason.

Calling hours will be 5 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83) in Vernon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 25, 2017 at noon directly at St. Patrick Church, 282 Suffolk Street, Lowell, MA. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell, MA.
