Vernon PD Warns Public About Internet Billing Site
Vernon police have issued a warning about an internet payment portal that could be confused with the official town tax site.

VERNON, CT — Vernon police have issued a warning about an internet payment portal that could be confused with the official town tax site.
Local police sent out a warning about the site Doxo Monday, but said the Better Business Bureau has been "working with Doxo" since Sept. 6 "to eliminate customer confusion regarding its services offered in the marketplace." Doxo portrays individual towns.
Doxo is a third-party billing site that offers consumers a way to pay bills with a single account similar to how a bank's bill pay system works. Depending on the biller, Doxo may charge a service fee for payment delivery, police said. Police said payment "may not be immediate" and in some cases it may take three-to-10 days before payment is delivered and posted to an account.

Police said in some respects Doxo is a "deceiving website that looks similar to the town Collector of Revenue site."
Police officials decided to post a alert after receiving complaints from the public about fees.

"If you look at the site, it does look official in some respects," Vernon police spokesman Lt. William Meier said.
Here's the Doxo (Vernon) homepage:

"Essentially, it's buyer beware," Meier said. It's a legitimate business but it looks a lot like the official Town of Vernon site. People need to explore Doxo before using it and the approved way is to talk to the tax collector's office.
