Vernon Police Charge Man for Gun-Waving Incident Off Route 83

He had a gun in his yard on Union Street, police said.

VERNON, CT — Vernon police on Thursday arrested the man who a week ago was brandishing a gun in a yard off Route 83.

Edward Sullivan, 45, of 200 Union St. in the Rockville section of town, surrendered in the lobby of the Vernon Police Department on Thursday, VPD spokesman Lt. William Meier said. Police applied for a warrant for his arrest following the incident at his house on Dec. 2.

That evening, shortly before townspeople were to gather at Central Park for the annual tree lighting festivities, police received a 911 call from a family member who reported Sullivan had pulled a gun and was threatening to harm himself, Meier said.

When officers arrived, Sullivan came outside the home, and began waving a revolver around in the air, Meier said. The home is located close to Route 83 and several businesses and a busy intersection.

Police were forced to shut down the road and the surrounding area while negotiating with Sullivan, Meier said. After about 30 minutes he was taken into custody without incident, Meier said.

No one was injured, Meier said.

Sullivan was brought to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation following the incident and police seized numerous firearms from his residence, Meier said.

Sullivan was charged with second-degree breach of peace and Interfering with police, Meier said. He is currently being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Friday, Meier said.
