VERNON,CT — Vernon police Wednesday issued an advisory about the use of "illegal fireworks" ahead of the long Fourth of July weekend.

There will be no public fireworks display in town this year with the cancellation of the annual July in the Sky event.

Vernon police said they have responded to 69 fireworks complaints already in 2020.

Here is the message from the VPD:

"We would like to remind community members that sparklers and fountains that emit sparks when lit are the only legal fireworks in the state. These types of sparklers and fountains cannot be sold to or used by anyone younger than 16.
"Please exercise caution when using sparklers and fountains.
"Illegal fireworks include devices that fly, shoot and explode. Some examples of illegal
fireworks are firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, Roman candles, Daygo bombs, and any
fireworks containing any explosive or flammable compound."

"The Vernon Police Department will investigate complaints of fireworks and if you are found to be in violation of CT law you could face criminal charges. "
