VERNON, CT — Vernon police Wednesday were asking for the public's help locating a 56-year-old man who was last seen Tuesday afternoon, but he has been found.Several hours after the Vernon Police Department put out an alert on the missing man's whereabouts, the VPD said he was found safe Wednesday afternoon."Thank you for everyone's help," wrote the VPD. The man was last seen by family members at his Vernon residence at about 2 p.m. Aug. 11, according to police. Authorities did not provide additional information about the circumstances of his disappearance.

Finex Credit Union will host a Shred Day on Saturday, September 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at its Vernon branch, located at 60 Hyde Avenue, Vernon, CT. The event is free and open to the public.
The event will give community members an opportunity to securely dispose of sensitive documents in a safe and convenient way. Attendees may bring up to three boxes of paper documents per person. Only paper documents will be accepted for shredding.
In addition to shredding services, Finex will also be accepting non-perishable food donations for Hockanum Valley Community Council Food Pantry during the event.
Finex invites community members to stop by with documents to shred and, if they are able, bring a non-perishable food item to donate.

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.
