VERNON, CT — Vernon police said Thursday's shooting incident involved a gathering of 18 people near the intersection of Ward and Prospect streets in the Rockville section of town and could be connected to similar incidents that have taken place over the past several months. A vehicle and a discarded gun have been collected as evidence, a police spokesman said.

The incident took place just before 1 p.m. Vernon Police Department spokesman Lt. William Meier said a scuffle ensued and one person described as "an adult male" was hit with a gun in "pistol-whipped" fashion. The man suffered a minor injury and refused treatment at the scene, Meier said.

A shot was fired in the direction of the man, but the shooter missed, Meier said. A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene, Meier said.
