Vernon Resident Honored in 60 Over 60 Awards
Vernon resident Carol Nelson was honored recently with a 60 Over 60 Award.

BLOOMFIELD, CT, June 20, 2017 – Vernon resident Carol Nelson was honored recently with a 60 Over 60 Award. This is the first year the awards have been presented to Connecticut citizens over age 60 who make a difference in the lives of others or in their communities. The 60 Over 60 award was created by Duncaster as a way to showcase the lives of people 60 or better who continue to have a unique impact on their world, their communities or the lives of others. Nelson was celebrated at a reception on the Duncaster campus in Bloomfield.
Nelson was honored for her volunteer work with the Cove Center for Grieving Children. She lost her son at the age of 12 and through her battle, she chose to help other families through this community-based non-profit. Nelson helps grieving children and families cope with the death of an immediate family member. She also serves as a cook at the Cornerstone Soup Kitchen of Saint John’s Church in Vernon. Carol participates in the “Cooks for a Cause” program, where every month, she serves brunch to 50 to 70 people, depending on the need. In addition she is a director of the altar guild at her church, Eucharistic minister, and a licensed Eucharistic visitor.
Duncaster began their search for 60 Over 60 on January 1. They received nominations of remarkable individuals from throughout Connecticut. “Our state has so many extraordinary people who are 60 or better so we were not surprised at the number of nominations we got. Clearly there are many people who wanted to recognize people 60 or better for their continued accomplishments,” says Carol Ann McCormick, VP Sales and Marketing at Duncaster. “We’ve all heard of 40 Under 40 awards that highlight the successes of this group of people. We thought it was high time to recognize the ongoing inspiration and achievement of those 60 or better. We were delighted with the response to it.”
