
TRUMBULL, CT — In the second game of the 9/10 State Softball Tournament, Westport defeated Vernon-Rockville 4-2 on Thursday night.
Westport pitcher Morgan Carathan of Westport tossed a one hitter and struck out 11 hitters. Carathan supported her effort by hitting a two-run double to left center off of Caitlin Chatterton in the first inning.
Westport added a run in the third inning charged to Chatterton and a run in the fifth inning off of Lexi Real.

Chatterton (three ) and Real (seven) combined for 10 strikeouts for Vernon-Rockville. Madison Johanson and Morgan Geisinger made key defensive plays for Vernon-Rockville.
Chloe Keane had Vernon-Rockville's lone hit, a single to right field that drove in Johanson and Real in the top of the fifth inning.

The loss dropped Vernon-Rockville to 1 -1 in the four-team double-elimination tournament finals and 10 - 2 overall in tournament play.
Vernon-Rockville is scheduled play Seymour (1-1) on Friday night. Seymour eliminated Waterford (0 - 2) from the tournament on Thursday night. The winner of the Vernon-Rockville-Seymour will then have to defeat Westport on successive days Saturday and Sunday to win the state championship.
