Vernon School Board Debating Decorated Graduation Caps at RHS

The Vernon Board of Education is discussing whether to allow decorated graduation caps at Rockville High School.

VERNON, CT — The Vernon Board of Education is debating whether students at Rockville High School should be allowed to decorate their graduation caps.

Right now, decorated, personalized caps are prohibited.

Students made a presentation this week on the concept. Vernon school system officials said the general ground rules proposed are:

  • Decorations on the top of the board only
  • No drug, sexual or alcohol references
  • Nothing three-dimensional
  • No decorations higher than a half-inch
  • The color of the the cap or tassel cannot be changed

Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary said it's a, "board decision ... a community decision."

The next scheduled meeting of the school board is slated for May 29. That is the last regularly scheduled meeting before the June 19 graduation, Macary said.
