Vernon Town Attorney Hal Cummings Passed Away
Mayor Champagne: "It's been a series of difficult days for the town of Vernon."
Vernon Town Attorney Harold ”Hal” Cummings passed away earlier this week.
“To all who knew him, Hal was a gifted lawyer, historian, conversationalist, and public servant,” said Mayor Daniel Champagne. “He served as the Town Attorney since 2007 and prior to taking on this role, Hal served on the Vernon Board of Education, the Vernon Conservation Commission and the Vernon Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also an active member other New England Civil War Museum.”
Champagne said it has been a series of difficult days in Vernon. Vernon’s first female mayor Marie Herbst recently passed away as well.

Cummings received his Juris Doctor degree in 1970 from Georgetown University. He served active military duty, including a tour in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division, according to his biography on his law firm’s website.
He continued military service in the Connecticut National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve after his return in 1972.

Cummings also served as Special Master for the Superior Court.
“He was knowledgeable, compassionate and dedicated to Vernon,” Champagne said. “His presence will be sorely missed and impossible to replace.”
