Water Main Breaks Near I-84 Interchange In Vernon

VERNON, CT — A water main broke on South Frontage Road in Vernon early Thursday afternoon.

Vernon police reported the break at about 1 p.m. It took place on South Frontage west of the Interstate 84 eastbound Exit 66 interchange, police said.

A private construction crew has been working on sewer installation in the area are part of the eventual new home of Shawmut Equipment Company. The pipe appeared to "give way," during some of the work police said.

Tunnel Road will remain open as work progresses. Motorists will not be able to turn from Tunnel onto South Frontage Road, or from South Frontage onto Tunnel, police said.

Connecticut Water and Connecticut the state Department of Transportation are coordinating repairs and road closure matters.

About 600 Connecticut Water customers are being affected.

The intersection will be closed well into the evening, police estimated.
