VERNON, CT — A lingering online Yellow Pages listing is serving as a sort-of business tombstone for a long-closed but not forgotten Vernon restaurant.

A listing for Tasty Chick still exists. The old phone number is still there, but when one calls, a recorded voice very succinctly says the call cannot be completed as dialed.

The demise of Tasty Chick can be traced to the early 2000s. For many years, it was a legend, both in a culinary and social sense. Tasty Chick was located at 243 Regan Road — at the Route 83 intersection — and was known for fried food that could be smelled seemingly from miles away. Many old timers swear they can still sense the aroma.

The property sat dormant for a while, and in 2011, the sign was salvaged by a local resident. It has remained in private ownership ever since.

Tasty Chick featured a small dining room, a full take-out menu, and catering services along with daily specials. In a way, it was ahead of its time by touting the use of salt- and cholesterol-free vegetable shortening when cooking the chicken and seafood selections.
