WALLINGFORD, CT — Lyman Hall senior Jason Perricone has been nominated for USA Football's Heart of a Giant Award presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants.
The 2026 USA Football Heart of a Giant Award recently announced the group of nominees for Week 1.
The Tri-State area high school students have all been nominated for the award by their coaches for "their commitment, teamwork, will, character, and dedication on and off the field," according to a news release.
The voting period is open for Week 1 nominees until Sept. 27.
The nominee with the most votes will be named that week's finalist. At the conclusion of the six-week process, there will be a total of 11 honorees (six weekly finalists and five honorable mentions) recognized for their work ethic and character.
Each finalist will receive a $1,000 equipment grant for their high school football program, with the grand prize winner earning an additional $9,000 grant for their school and being honored on the field at a future Giants game this season. Selection of the grand prize winner will be based on video submissions explaining why they have the Heart of a Giant, according to the news release.

Jason Perricone, a senior at Lyman Hall, embodies leadership through his commitment to his family, football, academics, and community. As the oldest of four siblings, Jason has embraced the responsibility of being a role model for his brothers and sister while maintaining a strong GPA, working at a local restaurant, and preparing to make an impact on the varsity football field. Jason's journey in football has been defined by perseverance. He entered high school as a 5'2", 105-pound cornerback with no organized youth football experience. After years of difficult reps and setbacks, he committed himself to the weight room and offseason preparation. Jason has now added more than 50 pounds and developed into a leader in his defensive back room. He encourages his teammates to play with heart, grit, and intelligence, reminding them that size does not determine their ability to succeed. His leadership extends well beyond the field. Jason volunteers at youth football camps, where he teaches young athletes and helps them build confidence. One moment that remains especially meaningful was seeing a camper return the following year after working through struggles, proudly telling Jason how much he had improved. As a student council representative and incoming president, Jason also leads community efforts, from raking leaves for elderly neighbors to supporting local soup kitchens and animal shelters. Whether helping his siblings, teammates, classmates, or younger athletes, Jason leads by encouraging others to believe in themselves and give back.
