Scam Alert Issued In Wallingford

Officials are advising residents of a recent scam that has been reported in Wallingford.

WALLINGFORD, CT — Officials are advising residents of a recent scam in Wallingford that involves the Wallingford Electric Division.

"The Wallingford Electric Division (WED) has learned that customers have received collection calls from scammers," officials wrote in a post on the Town of Wallingford Government Facebook page. "These calls originate from an 844 number, and the person(s) demand that the account(s) be paid in full to avoid being shut off that day."

Officials said that while the Wallingford Electric Division does reach out to customers by phone, "the Division does NOT demand payment in full by the end of the day."

"WED employees are NOT equipped to take payment over the phone," officials wrote in the post. "Do NOT give your banking information to anyone claiming to represent the Wallingford Electric Division. Do NOT call the number that the individual instructs you to call. If you should receive a call from someone claiming to be with the WED and you suspect otherwise, hang up the phone and call the WED customer service at 203-294-2020.

"If you have questions on how to pay your electric bill, please refer to the bill for payment instructions, or call the WED customer service department."
