WALLINGFORD, CT — A "discrepancy" recount will take place in Wallingford after the town ran out of ballots on Election Day and contingency ballots were erroneously fed into the town's tabulators, according to WFSB 3.
Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas said in a statement, via WFSB 3, that Wallingford ran out of ballots and, "following state contingency procedures, printed new ones."
"Because these ballots could not be run through the tabulators, we advised the town election officials that they segregate these ballots and count them by hand," Thomas said. "We later learned that these ballots were fed into the tabulator instead. We have been in touch with the Wallingford moderator to tell them that they should conduct a discrepancy recount. Under Connecticut law (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9-311), election moderators have the authority to call for such a recount within three days after an election to investigate and resolve discrepancies in vote totals. For today's election, that deadline is Friday.
"This is exactly why Connecticut uses paper ballots. We don't guess. We check. We're committed to ensuring every ballot is counted fairly and accurately."
In races that were declared on Tuesday, it was a big night for Democrats statewide, as Gov. Ned Lamont won a third term and all five Democratic congressional candidates were re-elected: Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes, Luke Bronin, Joseph Courtney, and Jahana Hayes.
Also winning re-election were Attorney General William Tong, Sec. of State Stephanie Thomas, Treasurer Erick Russell, and Comptroller Sean Scanlon, according to Hearst Connecticut.
(Update: 10: 20 p.m.) Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro has claimed victory to a 19th term in the 3rd Congressional District by defeating Republican challenger Christopher Lancia, according to the New Haven Independent.
While the Associated Press has yet to call the race, the Independent reports DeLauro delivered a fiery victory speech before 75 to 80 supporters at the Shubert Theatre on Tuesday night.
With Democrats looking to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, DeLauro could regain her role as chair of the Appropriations Committee, where she currently serves as ranking Democrat.
