Gunpowder Creek Field

Join us for a community stargazing session at Choate's Gunpowder Creek Field! Under the guidance of NASA Solar System Ambassador Geoffrey McLean, we'll view the rings of the planet Saturn, which will be at a high visibility point in its orbit that evening. We'll also seek out Saturn's moons, as well as the planets Uranus and Neptune and the "Owl Cluster," a group of gravitationally-bound stars that resembles an owl hunting for her supper. Geoffrey's real-time imaging telescope will allow us to see a number of other magnificent deep sky objects such as globular clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. Astronomy enthusiasts of all ages are welcome; please remember to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes!
This event is a special collaboration between the Wallingford Public Library and Choate Rosemary Hall. Free campus parking is available at the Carr Hall Garage, which is located at 333 Christian St, Wallingford, CT 06492. Click here for Choate's map of athletic venues and parking areas to find parking and walking directions from Carr Hall to Gunpowder Creek Field.

1741 Pub and Grill

Finding someone can be painful. But board games are always awesome. So what if you combined board games and searching for a partner?

Picture this: Check out the vibe at 1741 Pub & Grill at Lyman Orchards Golf Club for a night of games and mingling. You sit down for a night of games. A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics you love and discover brand new games you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. Explore the menu and nosh on amazing selections of food and drink, from savory entrees to craft beers that pair perfectly with the fun. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out. Best case scenario: You find true love, discover some awesome board games, and make some new friends. Bad case scenario: You accomplish only one of those three things, which is still pretty great. Worst case scenario: There will be alcohol. Thursday, November 5th from 6 PM - 8 PM

Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:1) This event is for men & women, ages 25-39. We also have events for gay men and queer women. And we're hoping to add events to serve even more people in the future! Head over to https://www.quirkevents.com/connecticut to see what else we have to offer. (If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, you'll be able to join our mailing list and get notified about future events. Plus, joining our mailing list gets you 50% off your first ticket purchase!)2) To stay up-to-date on everything we have going on at Quirk Events, follow us on Instagram @quirkeventshq!3) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 48 hours' notice, in order to make sure we have enough time to find a replacement for you and keep the event well-populated. (Exceptions will be made for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis). After that, we're blowing the money from your ticket sale on something awesome and nonrefundable.4) If we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold five tickets for each gender, we will cancel the event (and notify you). When we have run this event in the past, tickets have consistently sold very well, so we don't expect this to happen. But we thought we should cover this in case it came up.5) How many games we have and which ones we use will be based in part on how many people attend, so we can't tell you for sure what we'll have right now. But the goal is for all of them to be fun, light, easy-to-learn games. Selection will include games from both the something-you-have-played-before category and the something-you-haven't-played-before category. The games are also chosen because they often tend to spark conversation and leave room for chatting with new people as you play. All games will be group games, meaning you'll get a chance to meet a handful of people with each new round.

Join us for a wellness workshop in honor of Alzheimer's Awareness Month! This program provides research-backed guidance on brain health and outlines the importance of taking action at every age to protect your brain. Research shows there are everyday habits you can build today to help protect your memory and thinking as you get older — even reducing your risk of cognitive decline and possibly dementia.
In this presentation, participants will:

Learn about healthy habits for their brain, like exercising and eating right.

Hear why brain health is important at all ages.

Build a personalized action plan for brain-healthy habits.

Jane Fisher, Volunteer Community Educator for the Alzheimer's Association of CT, will lead this interactive program.
This is a hybrid event; patrons have the option of attending in-person at the library or virtually on Zoom. Registration is required; please sign up using this link!
