MERIDEN, CT — A Wallingford man driving a pickup truck was killed Friday afternoon after his vehicle slammed into the back of a car on Interstate 91, prompting a 4-vehicle collision chain and closing the southbound side of the highway for about three hours, according to state police.

Around 1:54 p.m., a Nissan Frontier operated by Robert Holcomb, 81, struck the rear of a Ford Focus north of Exit 18. The Focus was pushed into the rear of a Honda Accord, which in turn was pushed into the rear of a Nissan Murano, state police said.

Holcomb, who would have turned 82 next Thursday, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the operator of the Focus was taken by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital with possible injuries. No one in the other two vehicles required medical treatment, state police said.
