Man Knocked Victim Unconscious During Assault In Walmart Parking Lot: Wallingford PD

The man confronted the victim after believing that he took photos of a juvenile family member with his cellphone, according to police.

WALLINGFORD, CT — A man is accused of knocking another man unconscious during an assault in the Walmart parking lot last month in Wallingford, according to police.

Police responded around 9:40 p.m. on July 25 to Walmart at 844 North Colony Road on the report of an assault in the parking lot.

Officers found an adult male victim suffering from injuries to his head and face, according to police.

Police said the victim was initially treated at the scene and later sought additional medical treatment. The victim sustained serious facial and head injuries, according to police.

“The investigation determined that the victim had been confronted by Darel Hernandez Vargas after Vargas and a juvenile family member believed the victim had been taking photographs of the juvenile with his cellular phone,” police wrote in a news release. “Vargas allegedly struck the victim in the head, knocking him to the ground. While the victim was on the ground, Vargas allegedly struck him again before kicking him in the face, rendering him unconscious.”

Police said Vargas and the juvenile left the area after the assault.

Vargas was identified as the suspect through surveillance footage and additional investigative efforts by members of the Wallingford Police Department Crime Suppression Unit, according to police.

Vargas was arrested Aug. 18 on a warrant and charged with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and breach of peace. He was released after posting a $15,000 bond with a court date of Aug. 27.
