WALLINGFORD, CT — (From Wallingford Funeral Home): After a courageous battle with a lengthy illness, Robert G. Dwyer of Wallingford, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully departed this world at MidState Medical Center in Meriden on January 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Robert Gerald Dwyer, was born on November 19, 1938, in Waterbury, CT, to the late Eugene and Helen Dwyer. Affectionately known as ‘Bob’ or ‘Bobby,’ he was the third of seven children. Growing up in public housing with five brothers and one sister was a whirlwind of activity, fostering strong bonds among the Dwyer siblings.

In his youth, Bob worked at Lake Drug on West Main Street, Waterbury, and at his Uncle Jack’s golf range/restaurant in Watertown. Notably, he was voted ‘cutest’ in his high school yearbook.

Bob’s journey continued after graduating from Wilby High School in 1956. Following a brief period in business school, he made a life-changing decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, an experience he often spoke of as defining his character for the rest of his life.

In 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Marguerite Theresa Samela, shortly after an honorable discharge from active duty.

Embarking on a career at United Parcel Service, Bob rose through the ranks, initially as a driver and eventually as a Division Manager. His work included a seat at the table representing UPS management during contract negotiations with the Teamsters in the 1980s. The family experienced several moves between Connecticut and Massachusetts due to company transfers, ultimately settling in Wallingford in 1985.

Bob and Marge welcomed their three children—Mark, born in 1961; Michael, born in 1965; and Melissa, born in 1970. Bob played third base in a variety of adult softball leagues, served as referee for the Chargers youth football program (Franklin, MA) and was an active member of the B.P.O.E. Bob and his two sons enjoyed New England Patriots season tickets for many years even though Bob was a closet New York Jets fan and was particularly fond of Joe Namath.

Bob retired from UPS in 1995, and he and Marge embraced the joy of travel, exploring distant places like Ireland, Hawaii, and Alaska. They also found a second home in Myrtle Beach, SC, savoring the southern warmth and forming close bonds with their new neighbors. Yet, their hearts always drew them back to Wallingford, where their granddaughters, Emily and Corinne Laliberte, brought immense joy.

A skilled handyman with a passion for home renovations, Bob dedicated his time as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed golf, tending to his lawn, grilling hot dogs every Saturday night, and sharing frequent luncheons with fellow UPS retirees. Beneath his reserved demeanor lay a generous spirit, known for his kindness towards family and strangers alike. Though occasionally grumpy and fond of teasing, his family held the utmost significance, especially his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bob leaves behind cherished memories, dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. It brings comfort to envision him reunited with Grandma in eternal peace.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Marguerite, Bob is survived by his son Mark and daughter-in-law Dr. Stacey Goldstein-Dwyer of Albuquerque, NM; son Michael and daughter-in-law Margaret (Penny) Swallow Dwyer of Shamong, NJ; daughter Melissa and son-in-law Rene Laliberte of Wallingford; daughter-in-law Maureen Dwyer of Franklin, MA; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brother William (Billy) of Miller Place, NY, and sister Lois Mehmet of Wolcott. Additionally, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Bob’s name to the Summer Campership Fund, c/o Doreen Marinaro, Ion Bank, 500 West Main Street, Meriden, CT 06451.
