WALLINGFORD, CT — Police are warning residents of a phone scam in which the caller is posing as a DEA agent, and a Wallingford Police Officer.
A resident reported the fraudulent call to police on Wednesday.
The scammers asked the resident to buy several gift cards, and to send pictures of those cards to them, according to Sgt. Stephen Jaques.

Jaques said the scammers warned that if the resident didn’t send them the items they asked for, they would then come and arrest them.
“During this fraud scheme, the scammers spoofed the Wallingford Police Department main telephone line 203-294-2800, to make it seem like the victim actually received a call from the Police Department,” Jaques wrote in a news release. “The Wallingford Police Department asks citizens to use caution. We will NEVER call to ask you to buy gift cards, send us money, or conduct monetary transactions on our behalf. If you receive a suspicious call or email from someone claiming to be law enforcement, please stop down to see us at our headquarters (135 North Main Street) or call 203-294-2800 to speak with a dispatcher so we can assist you.”
