Armed Standoff Ends After 12+ Hours: Wallingford Police

Police aided the victims in exiting through a second story window, police said.

WALLINGFORD, CT — In an update Saturday afternoon, police said they responded to a Perkins Drive home just before 10 p.m. on Friday for a reported suicidal male threatening to harm himself with a firearm.

The caller reported there were three additional people in the home, two women and one man, according to police. The three other occupants went to the master bathroom on the second floor of the home and locked themselves within, police said.

Police aided the victims in exiting through a second story window, then escorted the rescued occupants to safety. The man remained in the home alone and armed, police said.

The Cheshire-Wallingford Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiators, Wallingford Fire
Department, and Wallingford Police Detectives responded. Officers attempted
to communicate with the man for numerous hours, police said.

Wallingford police received assistance from the South Central Regional SWAT team.

"We utilized an armored vehicle, a drone, and a tactical surveillance robot to help resolve the situation peacefully," police wrote in a news release.

A 50-year-old man surrendered peacefully at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, police said. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation. He was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

Police had issued a "shelter in place order" around 1:30 a.m. for the area of Perkins Drive in Wallingford.

"We ask area residents to stay in their homes and away from their windows while police work on an active investigation that has not been resolved yet," police wrote in a post on Facebook at the time. "Non-residents, please avoid the area. More information will be released at a later time. "

The shelter-in-place order was canceled around 10:50 a.m. on Saturday.
