Wallingford BOE to Hold Special Meeting After Mayor Plans Additional Cuts to Budget

Superintendent of Schools Sal Menzo warns of potential layoffs and elimination of programs due to the reduction to the requested budget.

WALLINGFORD, CT — The Wallingford Board of Education is holding a special operations meeting on Wednesday, April 27 after receiving word that Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. plans to recommend an additional $500,000 be reduced from its requested spending plan.

The public meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at 100 South Turnpike Road and the board will discuss next steps and potential recommendations, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sal Menzo said in an email to parents on Tuesday afternoon.

Menzo also warned of potential layoffs and elimination of programs due to the reduction.

“As of our presentation last week to the Town Council, the sustained services budget with no additional programming or staff was a 2.27% increase to this year’s funding,” Menzo wrote in the email. “With the latest reduction, the funding for next year will be reduced to an increase of 1.80%.

“Needless to say, this places an additional burden on the budget process. This reduction will require layoffs of staff and the potential elimination of programs.”
